So I had a Husky 33gal 1.7hp, 175psi 6.2cfm air compressor get dropped off because it "sounded like shit" and could I fix it. Well sure, I'll take a look at it. Yep, it's fucked. So now I have a $400 compressor sitting here needing a $350 pump and motor assembly that the dude has zero desire to repair. So I'm thinking instead of fixing it back to factory I'll spend the same $350-ish on a two-stage, 8.0+cfm, 175psi pump and 3hp motor and just fab up a new mounting bracket with my handy dandy and free stick welder.

Edit: OH and it sounds like it's got a few gallons of water sloshing around in the tank that I can't drain without building pressure, so I'll probably build a double male line and connect my pancake compressor to it to try and force the water out.

Judging form water in the tank I am guessing he never added oil to the compressor...

@MaryB yeah, that's just the pump for $381. Still have to buy the motor, the pulley, and pressure switch then fabricate the plumbing, mounting bracket, and tensioning system for the motor.

I've been looking at the less expensive v-twins in the 2-3hp range so I can reuse the 1.7hp motor that's on the old unit. I'll just need to swap out the drive pulley to match the belt style and size it to get the right RPM's. I won't get peak cfm on demand using the smaller motor, but I'll still get the top end pressure and be able to run what tools I usually run. Most pumps are rated for max [email protected] anyways. It's not like I'm going to be setting up an HVLP spray booth any time soon, and an LVLP is much better. Even with this setup I could use an HVLP gun to paint the individual parts with breaks between parts to build pressure back. Just wouldn't be able to sit there and spray a whole vehicle seamlessly.

Then that 7.5 CFM pump would be perfect and only $150 if I remember right. I am not a car painter, have no desire to be one LOL my new compressor is a 60 gallon Northstar(Northern Tool) 3.7HP and 11.5cfm at 90psi. More than enough for running air tools to work on stuff... I run an oversized air line into the house if I need air tools inside. Max PSI is only 135 though.

Exactly. I don't even know if I want to paint cars/parts/etc because while my attention to detail remains high, my patience to maintain it does not...

Plus it's a only 33 gallon. Definitely an advanced hobbyist compressor, but not pro grade. I would love to run up on a 75gal unit though... So I'm just going to balance CFM with HP in the likelihood that I decide to upgrade the motor later. Who knows? Maybe some goofball will destroy the pump or tank on a bigger unit and I can rob parts off of it!

I got it in-store from Fastenal, sort of. My buddy works there said he thought he could hook me up with something and found it in his system. I guess it's kind of like I ordered off menu because you won't find it on their page.

Fastenal stores/reps are great. We used them at the casino. Rep came in every 2 weeks, went over the bolt/chemicals inventory and made up an order for the parts guy to sign off on. Time saver. I ordered some pretty oddball hardware from him when I worked there!

And it showed up in pieces, with no air cleaner, oil everywhere, and upside down on my front step.

I hate FedEx.

I ordered a Tv from Amazon 2 weeks ago. It was broken. Sent it back and the replacement is being delivered tomorrow. It will probably be broken also.

I hate fedex too. Delivered a load yesterday. RJ Shiner. The bills said they refuse to accept any freight hauled by them.

Freight is slowing down nationwide. FedEx is putting the screws to FedEx ground subcontractors.
