Hi all, I am going to purchase one more weapon before years end I have narrowed it down to 3 rifles. If you had the choice of one of these weapons for fun at the range/SHTF choice what would you pick? AK74, Mini-14 or a AR15. This will be hopefully only ever used for fun at the range, but also will serve as my SHTF weapon. I am really leaning towards the Tantal because of the cheap ammo, but I am not completely sold on the stopping power of 5.45X39.

Based on everything you said, it sounds like an AK-47 (I'm not too familiar with the 74) would be a great choice for you. You can treat it like crap and it'll always keep firing. Ammo is cheap and plentiful and the stopping power of the round is legitimate. The Ruger and AR are both GREAT options, but for what you described I think the AK is the best choice.

I've never messed with the AK74 so I don't know about it. I know a few people with Mini 14s, and some of them have good luck, some bad. I don't like messing with odds on weapons, so I'd recommend an AR-15 for you. The mags are a lot cheaper for AR also.

go with the AK either the 74 or 47. that is what the enemy will be using and ammo will be the same.

ok for shtf there are 2 things to consider
1 reliability
2 being on platform aka being able to easily get your hands on ammo mags and parts
the ar does this the best
the ak is an amazing weapon but you have to consider that all matial law personel and 90% of the LEO will be sporting so get on the team and get the ar
