So once again long time no post. Anyway, just got myself a model 99 in 308 and trying figure out the date on this thing. I handed over $675 for it including ffl transfer fee, and i think it's worth at least what i paid. But trying to date this thing is a bit confusing. I know it's a post 1952 since it's in 308, just trying to figure out exactly when it was made and what exact model. It doesn't have the round counter and has e stamped on the receiver. It does however appear to be a pre 1mil s/n since the s/n reads: A099749. Anyone in the know about savage 99's?

The 99E was reissued in '61 when Savage moved to Westfield and Chicopee Falls, Mass.

I'll need the lever boss code to know for sure.

    Yep. Looks like a 6 or 8 W?

W means it was made in 1969, if I'm not mistaken.

Probaby 5 with the action open, maybe 6 with the action open. Since .308 was spawned by .300 savage, probably 5, since 99s in .300sav had 5rd capacities. I'll know for sure once i get it out to the range

Savage year dates by serial number or boss code are sketchy. The only way to be sure is to write the historian.

Here's a story I got off the net to illustrate....

"I paid for a research letter from the Savage Historian, John Calahan relating to my Savage 99EG in .300 Savage quite a few years ago (around 1994). My lever boss code indicates the receiver was made in 1952. My 99EG's serial number 730XXX, was made in 1956 per Mr. Calahan. However, the rifle did not ship from the warehouse until 1962. That's not unusual for my rifle to not ship until 1962 based on the fact that Savage was chambering the 99 in .308 Winchester, simply by lengthening the ejection port to fit the longer .308 Win, which took a lot of customers away from the .300 Savage."

And yes, the rotary mag is five rounds.
