Preferable ammo for Phoenix Arms HP22?

I'm getting a PA HP22 this month, and I was wondering what ammo do you guys prefer?

Also, what do you think of the HP22?

$118 is a great price. I paid $125 two years ago.
I love having guns I don't really care about. Like a beater car. Put it away dirty. Shoot tons of ammo thew it let new shooters try it out and if it breaks use the warranty :)
I paid $125 for mine three years ago. Pretty good buy IMO.
Took mine to the range today for the first time and shoot a hundred rounds through it no problem and was fairly accurate at 50 feet, with a hundred rounds it started to loosen up and was easier to rack the slide. I modified the safety on mine so that you could drop the mag without having to fight the safeties.

Yeah I have been thinking about doing that. when I shot it often I though "I can live with this" but now when I take it out or let someone new shoot it, it becomes such a pain.
Have not been to this forum for a while. I am picking up a PA HP22A this friday. I know this thread is a little old but just getting this gun now. 22 ammo like hens teeth these days. Sometimes you just have to take what is available at the time and hope you have the money when the right stuff comes a long. As a side note to this and other " cheap " guns that the snobs say are junk, I did a youtube search on failed rugers, s&w, glock, sig, khar an h&k. With the exception of the khar and the h&k, which did have a few, all others had at least 20 or 30 vids of failures of one reason or another. So high dollar does not mean no problems. Every company makes some that work and some that don't
I have not tried every manufacture of .22s but my HP really likes Blazer.

IDK, just make sure it is "standard velocity" meaning usually 1050 FPS or less.
Sub-Sonic might be too low, but all true Standard Velocity is also sub-sonic,
if it is under 1130 FPS. Phoenix says use the SV so the frames will not crack.
I actually save all the "Range Snipes" I get, meaning unfired ammo. I took all
the unfired 22 I found and it all went BANG in my HP22 :D
I even shot a 22 short I found, and it cycled the next round! But I loaded
it directly into the chamber, by hand and then had a mag full of "Snipes"
(well, nearly full, I think I had 7 total) They all fired and cycled. ;) :D

Mine has fired everything I have tried in it. Federal, CCI, Aguila, so far, all good!

:welcome: to HPFF!!! :hyper:
I've found that if you can find CCI Standard, Blazer, or Remington Golden Bullet they will all work rimfire perfect, which means all issues are ammo related.. The gun will also shoot really hot ammo fine but you're risking substantially shortening the gun's lifespan by doing so.

I keep trying to find a recoil spring for the HP-22 that is slightly stronger, but still fits in the narrow range of spring compression.

Anyone found a spring yet that will help retard the slide momentum and reduce the stress on the frame without binding?
Make one or check Wolff springs

I thought about that too, but perhaps a better solution would be a
Recoil Buffer, which would damp out the slide to frame impact while
not affecting recoil velocity and slide movement at all. Most auto
loading pistols have a place where a recoil buffer can be safely installed.

Yea, me too. But the space available for a buffer is non-excitant, given how the spring is already fully compressed on extraction/ejection. There doesn't seem to be any room in the spring area with that design.

Still looking for ideas though. Maybe a flash of brilliance will hit some day.

Only thing I could see would be a buffer that replaces the recoil spring retainer.

That's a possibility also. But I still go back to finding a slightly higher rate spring or a progressive rate spring. My thinking that one could use HV 22lr. also.

The best would be to replace both....another project on my list.
Interesting...
Once my Gun Bunny gets back, I can have him check that out.
He's seen a lot of different styles and maybe he can dream something up.
I shot a lot of Golden Bullet and other bulk HV ammo in mine because it was all I could find. I found a crack in the slide at around 3,000 rounds which I attribute to the higher velocity ammo. I called Phoenix, they told me to send the slide to them and I had a new one in a week. I have some CCI tactical that is 1200 which I will use in it until I can find some SV. I find mine to be nearly as accurate as my 22/45 Ruger Mk III. I don't find the 5" barrel much different than the 3" regarding accuracy.
My son bought a used one with a holster and 3 mags for 50 bucks a few months ago. Short barrel model. It has some issues with the firing pin safety which we corrected. It had not been fired much. It would not feed CCI or Rem bulk pack very well. Fed bulk pack was better, but still some FTFs. Finally got it running with Winch Super X. Probably a bit too hot, but he doesn't shoot much like I do. Guess i will have to check it for cracks at some point.
How'd that workout I just got super x with for one that's maybe never been fired but is 20+ years old and FTF's every round

The person you quoted last posed on this board more than a decade ago. My guess is you'll never get an answer. Welcome to the forum. What HiPoints do you have?

20+ years old? Strip the gun and magazine down and give it a real through cleaning. 22 ammo is dirty stuff and old lube gunks up the works.

FWIW, the Phoenix Arms manual states that you should only run Standard Velocity ammo in the pistol.
