Question for @ajole

The LGS has a 16.5" CZ 457 Royal. This rifle intrigues me. And it fixed one of the things I do not like about CZ rifles, it has a push to fire safety. Price is $669, plus the government extortion fees. I see myself getting a stamp and a can if I purchase this.

You are the only one I know who is really knowledgeable about CZ .22’s and I wanted your opinion. Thanks!

That’s the 16.5 inch, they make a 20.5”. They are basically an “American”, which is the version set up for dedicated scope use because it has no irons and a higher comb than the older traditional models, and the Royal comes with a nicer checkered Turkish walnut stock with a longer forend with a cap.
CZ is known for having either bland wood, or really nice wood, so, if they have more than one, make them let you choose.

The 457 is the newest version, with that new safety, a 60 degree bolt for easier use with a scope, and the adjustable trigger.

The Royal is a nice model, but IMHO, a bit overpriced. Kind of a “made to entice collectors” model.

IF you can find an American, you get the long barrel and no checkering for $100-150 less....IF you can find one that’s not jacked up in price.

But that price is below MSRP, actually pretty decent compared to what I see for Royals, and the model isn’t that easy to find, so, if you want it, grab it.

I agree that it is over priced. It's long gun that fires the .22 Long Rifle. In my opinion if you are going to get a collector's firearm get a long gun that fires a more powerful and common caliber.

But is it overpriced? And what does it matter what the cartridge is? If it’s a favored cartridge, and the 22 and 17 Rimfires are amongst my favorites. As to the .22 Long Rifle not being common? On who‘s planet? And I don’t think @ajole was referring to the rifle as a collectors piece, but rather as an addition to a collection of .22 rimfires. (FWIW, I do have a few collectable .22 Rimfires, some of my dad’s Nylon rifles. The least of them are valued a few dollars more than the CZ we are talking about, and one is valued at almost twice the asking price of the CZ.)

Al seems to think it’s a decent price for that particular model.

I have not purchased the CZ, but I did handle it last week. It is a nice rifle. I did get an email from the LGS today saying that there is an additional 20% off for the July 4th sale. Plus I get a membership discount and a veterans discount. They open at 1pm tomorrow, if it’s still there I will put it on layaway.

Man that's short, with an overall length of 28 inches that's 5" shorter than my Pietta PPSH-41/22LR...and that's short!!! Ought to be a cool gun (y)

Does it take only CZ 5rnd mags (and how much) or will it take other makes???

You're gonna have to make a special gun case for it at that length (sorry, no rotfl emoji).

I have a safe set up for my beloved single shot shortys. It will fit nicely in there I think!

Not a “collectors” firearm, but a “CZ collectors” firearm.
Compared to the other .22 rifles in it’s class, the CZ’s aren’t bad. Some are even great deals.
For the features you get, like threaded barrels and adjustable triggers, walnut and steel...there’s not much out there for less.

And as Greg said...it doesn’t get anymore common than .22 LR.

I think it’s a typo on the CZ USA site, as the Scout only has a 12” length of pull, and it’s 32.75 inches. Other sources I read say the Royal is 865 mm overall, which is 34”.

They make 10 round and 25 round long banana single stack mags.

With those discounts, I’d jump on it, as in taking my lunch break to coincide with them unlocking the doors. If you’re unhappy once you shoot it, resale prices on CZ’s are solid.

Went to town yesterday. Saw a new American with the upgraded checkered stock for $550, and a Varmint for $650, and the Varmint “At One” with the 16” bull barrel and adjustable stock for $699.
With the discounts, you’d be right in the ballpark for a good deal.

I am a fan of CZ firearms. I have both pistols and one of their rifles. Love them all. They are wonderful values for what what you get. They are well made and fairly prices for what you are getting. The value of anything is determined by the buyer. If you like something because it "looks or fits right" and the price is in you budget....get it!
