Raven Arms P25 / MP25 Pistol
Caliber .25 ACP 6 + 1 capacity

Ravens were manufactured from 1971 until a fire destroyed the factory in 1991.
The factory was rebuilt as Phoenix Arms in Ontario California; the first pistol produced was a version of the Raven. Once up and running, Phoenix began production of the HP-22 and HP-25 pistols and discontinued the Raven.

(THE FOLLOWING 3 PARAGRAPHS ARE QUOTED DIRECTLY FROM THE MANUAL)

FIRING THE PISTOL
After loading your Magazine, insert it into the bottom of the pistol handle and push it into the pistol as far as possible. Point your pistol in a safe direction and with your other hand firmly grasp the serrated portion of the Slide and pull it as far rearward as it will go. Release the Slide from it's rearmost position, allowing it to go forward of it's own accord. This procedure places the first cartridge into the chamber and the gun is ready for firing. Subsequent feeding and ejection operations are performed automatically until the pistol is empty. NOTE: Unless the pistol is already cocked, the safety must be in the "FIRE" (F) position before the pistol can be cocked or loaded from the magazine supply.

DISASSEMBLY
The pistol must be in unloaded, uncocked condition before take down can be performed. To remove the slide, use a blunt object (such as a lead pencil eraser) to push the Retainer, located in the back end of the Slide, forward until it stops (about 1/4"). While holding the Retainer depressed, gently lift the rearward portion of the Slide away from the Frame until it stops. Release the Retainer gently as it is spring loaded. Hold the rearward portion of the Slide up and push the Slide forward, off of the end of the gun. This procedure removes the entire Slide Assembly and is sufficient for normal cleaning and oiling. Clean the Barrel within a reasonable period of time after shooting. After the powder residue has been removed, give the Barrel bore a protective coat of oil.

ASSEMBLY
Make sure the Recoil Spring is in the Frame. Place the Slide Assembly over the Barrel and pull rearward until it can be dropped down onto the Frame. Depress the Retainer into the Slide far enough to allow it to drop into its slot. Release the Retainer after Slide is pushed down onto the Frame. You should not be able to lift the rear of the Slide away from the Frame if properly assembled. After the Assembly is completed, but before loading, manually operate the pistol to see that everything functions properly.

********************

Although there are small variations in the guns over the years, there are three MAJOR changes to the models.

First Version: P-25 "Big Button" safety made in Baldwin Park CA. All slides are marked "Baldwin Park" Most parts do not interchange with later versions.
Second Version: P-25 "Sliding Safety". Early production slides still were marked "Baldwin Park CA" but the majority are "Industry CA" Second Version slides all have large grip serrations on them. Most parts will interchange with later model Ravens.
Third Version: MP-25 "Sliding Safety". These are essentially the same as the Second Version but the more grip serrations placed closer together.
Fourth Version: MP-25 "Disc Safety". This is a push up disc style safety that engages a notch on the slide. This was a significant improvement as the older sliding safety on previous versions had a tendency to accidentally engage/disengage at inopportune times.
This was the final version made by Raven in Industry; the factory burned to the ground in 1991.
Fifth Version: The Phoenix Model Raven is a fourth version Raven with the addition of a magazine safety disconnect. The slide is stamped Phoenix Arms, Ontario CA.

Note the two safeties: Part # 108 is a disc safety and 108a is a sliding safety.

The magazine safety disconnect found in the Phoenix version is part number 129. Grips on the Phoenix Version have a small relief cut into them to accommodate the spring.

I really want one of these - just because. Back in the day I could have bought them new for a song, but, being akid, I listened the gun shop guy and passed it up. To quote Rach - "Dumb A$$"!! Now they just don't exist in Nowhere PA. Really like the .25 for some reason. Some day I'll stumble onto oneat the right price and it'll follow me home

Is it because hand-loading for the .25ACP cartridge is so easy and relaxing?

DaveH is correct. I've purchased recoil springs and magazines from Phoenix just last year.

If you think that's fun, try doing .22 lr sometime. It can be done and I've considered it, but I have no hair to tear out, so I dropped the idea

Yeah - I'm just stupid enough to try it. I wonder how they'd work on a progressive? If I can ever con adam out of a Raven, I may give it a try.

SWoMBO has a Sterling 25ACP she inherited from her father. I intend to eventually do some minor restoration work on it (cosmetic). I have a nice inlaid wood curio box which I intend to make into a Presentation Box for it at some point also.

Friends don't let friends carry .25 autos. THAT being said, I do really like these Raven/Phoenix Pistols and own several of them. I remember when you could buy them new (in the 80s) for about 50.00 +/-.

Neat little pistols and surprisingly accurate and reliable. I'm not a fan of having to use two hands (in a potentially high pressure situation) to cock and load the weapon and I'm uncomfortable in using a pistol, that is a true striker fired pistol with a round in the chamber.

Look on Gun Broker or Auction Arms, you'll find them still.

Be forewarned that reassembling a Sterling Model 300 (25ACP) or Model 302 (22LR) is a major PITA. I had to walk into a local Nuke powerplant in order to temporarily grow a third hand with six digits so I could git 'er done...

the Raven was my first centerfire semi automatic. With it I developed a fondness of the 25 acp. Maybe I just got a good one, but it was accurate to 20 - 25 yards or so, and reliable. It put the Jennings J22 to shame.

The Raven was my first SNS, followed by a Davis D-32 derringer. And yeah, people who bought a Raven and followed up buying a Jennings J-22 were very disappointed.

I think most of the cosmetic issues are on the slide, ims. How's the slide to take down and reassemble>

@lklawson as long as the button on side pushes in and out (#22), and the slide release pops backward (#4), you'll be fine. They are both spring loaded and their fit is very snug. If they're gummed up use some penetrating oil on them and let it sit for a couple days. Use a pencil eraser to push in on the side button, it'll save your fingertips.

My mom has a 25acp that has the faux pearl type grips. I'm not sure if it's a Raven or not.
My step father was in law enforcment in the 70's. I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't taken from someone that was arrested and never made it to the evidence room.

@Greg We need pics at some point!
No longer have any of the ROF guns. They were lost in the great fire of '99. This is what ultimately replaced the Raven as my EDC BUG.

This is the closest I have to a SNS now, it survived the fire simply because it went with me on vacation. A six shot H&R in 32 long.
