Reducing stress and thinning out the herd.

Some of you might recall that I once had 2 10.5” 300 BLK pistols. Last year I pulled the barrel and brace off one and replaced them with a 16” barrel and carbine stock. I had left the other “as is.”

A couple of years ago I bought 2 very different 204 Ruger rifles. One was a Savage Model 12 LRPV and the other a Howa Mini Action.

Well, I decided that I no longer had the need for the BLK pistol and decided to strip it down into a box of parts. It turns out that the guy I bought it from, as well as the Howa, was interested in buying back the complete lower, without the SBA3 brace. He came by on Saturday with greenbacks and took it home.

He called me a couple days later and asked what I could sell him a 6.5 Grendel complete upper for. I did some looking around, but no one had one that suited his taste. He told me “no junk” parts. I looked around a little more at a couple of my supplier sites and I can build him an 18” BA barrel on Aero Precision with a Toolcraft BCG.

Finally, he asks me what I plan on doing with the Savage Model 12. I had plans to keep it, but I have never even fired it. Btw, I bought the Howa from him. So I floated him a price and he is ok with it. I’ll actually make $100 on the Savage sale. Maybe about $50 to $75 on the upper build.

I’m having to grind and file on a crow’s foot wrench to remove the BLK barrel nut. The barrel and brace will be up for sale very soon.

But how much is a used 300BK barrel going to fetch? I have the tools, but it also sounds like maybe the barrel nut is oversized. (Modified crows foot wrench)

It’s not oversized. It’s just that no one has 1-3/8, or 33 mm, or 1.2”, or whatever stupid nonstandard size wrenches the handguard makers decided to use.
I’ve built maybe a dozen ARs…I swear no two of them have the same sizes, and NONE of the wrenches I’ve bought fit ANY of them but the one I bought it for. Thank God for pipe wrenches.

Doubt it is oversized. A lot of the barrel nuts that use a crows foot style wrench will not accept a standard wrench, they require a thinner cross section.

It’s larger than 1 3/16”, but that is not necessarily oversized. This particular upper was not assembled by me or I would have the correct sized crow’s foot.
