remington had decalred the 597 rifle unsafe to fire along with certain lots of remington 17HMR ammunition. in the world of firearms screwups this one os pretty epic.

Which is it? the rifle or the ammo? this is pretty epic indeed. They say quit using the rifle immediately so I don't think its only lots of remington ammo what does the 17 HMR do to a semi auto that it doesn't do to a bolt action?

remy is being way too closed mouth abotu this. i cant get anyone to tell me what the exact failure is. i did call in and they told me it was BOTH ammo and rifles that were being recalled but refused to tell me what was going on. freaky.

i read a bit over on the reloadbench and one of teh guys over there got the info that its not a recall for repair. its a recall for compensation. you dont get your gun back! you get a coupon to buy another remington product. this is utter crap. this smacks of some kind of cover up to me. dangerous product get recalled and swept under the rug.

also the ammo that is recalled was built by an outside contractor for remington. rumor has it its CCI but no proof/confirmation. i wonder if remy QC is outsurced as well......

I just checked the remmington support site and there is only a recall on the 710....the 597 is definitely just a .22 platform....The model Five is .17... The 597 Magnum is a 22 Win Mag...

so either there is multiple models involved or something is screwy here.

ETA after some searching the 710 is a bolt action centerfire rifle that was recalled for breaking bolts. the 597 is a semi auto rimfire in 17 HMR that was recalled for an unknown reason. the 597 model in 17 HMR is no longer listed as an availble product.

The problem seems to be ALL 17HMR Semi-Autos are considered unsafe. I know some makers stopped production a while ago due to too many failures. The main failure seems to be case ruptures in dirty chambers. The recall is supposed to effect all semi-autos and no bolt guns. The Remington recall states semi-autos only. I know of some major problems with the Excel MR-17, they have a long and very bad history of blown cases. About the only rifle that does not have a lot of trouble is the Volquartsen. Most 17HMR shooters will tell you the rifles shoot best with a some what dirty barrel. My Savage 93R17 BTVS won't group well until I shoot 20 or so rounds after a complete cleaning.

Remington seems to be low balling on the buy back. I believe the cost on the 597 is about double the buy back offer.

CCI recalled some 17HMR ammo, but I'm unsure of what loadings.

remy had a dropped the 10-22 magnum after a short time. there were reports of case blowouts with that one as well IIRC. its been 7 or 8 years since the mag was dropped from production.

The Remington 597s in .22LR and .22 WMR are not subject to the recall, only the .17HMR. And the .17HMR ammunition is still considered safe to be used in bolt-action or single-shot rifles.

More than likely, just a CYA move to ensure that should someone blow themselves up using it in a semi-auto, Remington can say "well, we told you not to use it, and even tried to get you to send it back to us." Over at Rimfirecentral, a Remington representative was asked about the ammo, and he replied that it was safe in bolt guns and single shots, but for some reason, semi-autos are bad news. I have an H&R single shot, and was instructed that it was safe to use Remington ammo in it. He also said, BTW, that all .17HMR ammo on the market is made by one company, and then farmed out to the other companies to package and market, so the ammo recall notice against using it in semis could be read to include all .17 HMR ammo on the market.

I think it is pretty bad that they are giving you a $10 coupon for a $15 box of ammo, though. And $250 for the laminated stock 597 HMR? Those guns are selling for upwards of $400 now... come on Remington, you gotta try harder than that!

I wouldn't be surprised if the same ammo is re boxed with a warning label "DO NOT USE IN SEMI-AUTO FIREARMS" or something to that effect.

You are correct case ruptures have happened on the 597. But the rifle can also fire out of battery. (Action stuck open slightly.) Mine has never exploded. But I never rapid fired the 597. And due to my experiences with the Magnum 10/22's I always checked after firing each round for case ruptures, action not closed completely, etc. I had the 597 not close completely on more than one occasion. And yes it would have fired had I not caught it.

FYI - My 597 was about $275 OTD (laminate 17HMR). Heard others have paid $370 or more for one. I should not have to eat $25. But guess I am luckier than others though.

I will actually be glad to finally get rid of it. I couldn't sell it since I was concerned who ever bought it might get injured.

i think remy might get sued over thier lowball price. you cant screw people over on a product liek that and not pay them full retail rpice. as long as they can com eup with proof of purchase price, remy should refund that in full
