My first experience with a center fire handgun was the 32 S&W. Grandpa’s Colt Police Positive. The first center fire handgun I purchased was also a 32 S&W. The 4" H&R 733. My 2nd center fire handgun was another 32, S&W. Also a H&R 733, but this one was the 2" version. i still have the 2" H&R, lost the other one in a fire.
I switched to 38 special as my primary after the fire. And picked up a Lorcin 380 acp. Didn’t much like the Lorcin, but that eventually led to the purchase of the Hi Point CF380, and incidentally me joining the Hi Point Firearms Forum!
I never owned a 32 acp pistol, but recently purchased a surplus Zastava M70 in 32acp. At first I did not like the pistol. To the point of letting the LGS put it pack in stock and me buying a derringer in its place. But it intrigued me,(as most all metal pistols do) and I did find myself looking at it through the glass of the display case about every time I went in the shop. The last one finally sold and it was then out of mind....until another batch cane in. This batch only had one magazine and did not come with the holster or cleaning brush. Plus the price tag was $50 less and they offered to let me put it on layaway for $5. The rest is history.
Anyways, I took it to the range and found out that I liked it pretty well. Went through my first 2 boxes (100 rounds) and went back for more. Another 2 boxes were bought and they all went off without a hitch as well. I went back for more, but they only had 1 box left. I shot it all up (except for enough to fill my 2 magazines) with no failures. Reliable is good! Accuracy is too, and while the Zastava is certainly not the most accurate pistol I have, it’s accurate enough. Any misses are the shooters fault, not the gun’s fault.
This thing has rekindled my interest in the 32 caliber cartridges and the last two range sessions the H&R Snubbie was shown a little love as well. I think it’s about time that I add these handguns to my rotation.
Some will question why I would use a 32? I myself believe in the larger is better theory. And I believe that the Ruger LCR and the KAHR are the best handguns ever devised for social work. Mine are chambered for 38 special and 45 acp respectively. So why would I want to step backwards?
I have used the 32 S&W Long extensively. I used the 4" H&R 733 as my sidearm regular. While I would never choose the cartridge for deer, I found the cartridge to be quite effective on animals up to large feral dogs. Never used the 32acp on anything but paper and reactive targets, but it shoots a lighter bullet at a higher velocity. I would think the performance would be similar.
