My first experience with a center fire handgun was the 32 S&W. Grandpa’s Colt Police Positive. The first center fire handgun I purchased was also a 32 S&W. The 4" H&R 733. My 2nd center fire handgun was another 32, S&W. Also a H&R 733, but this one was the 2" version. i still have the 2" H&R, lost the other one in a fire.

I switched to 38 special as my primary after the fire. And picked up a Lorcin 380 acp. Didn’t much like the Lorcin, but that eventually led to the purchase of the Hi Point CF380, and incidentally me joining the Hi Point Firearms Forum!

I never owned a 32 acp pistol, but recently purchased a surplus Zastava M70 in 32acp. At first I did not like the pistol. To the point of letting the LGS put it pack in stock and me buying a derringer in its place. But it intrigued me,(as most all metal pistols do) and I did find myself looking at it through the glass of the display case about every time I went in the shop. The last one finally sold and it was then out of mind....until another batch cane in. This batch only had one magazine and did not come with the holster or cleaning brush. Plus the price tag was $50 less and they offered to let me put it on layaway for $5. The rest is history.

Anyways, I took it to the range and found out that I liked it pretty well. Went through my first 2 boxes (100 rounds) and went back for more. Another 2 boxes were bought and they all went off without a hitch as well. I went back for more, but they only had 1 box left. I shot it all up (except for enough to fill my 2 magazines) with no failures. Reliable is good! Accuracy is too, and while the Zastava is certainly not the most accurate pistol I have, it’s accurate enough. Any misses are the shooters fault, not the gun’s fault.

This thing has rekindled my interest in the 32 caliber cartridges and the last two range sessions the H&R Snubbie was shown a little love as well. I think it’s about time that I add these handguns to my rotation.

Some will question why I would use a 32? I myself believe in the larger is better theory. And I believe that the Ruger LCR and the KAHR are the best handguns ever devised for social work. Mine are chambered for 38 special and 45 acp respectively. So why would I want to step backwards?

I have used the 32 S&W Long extensively. I used the 4" H&R 733 as my sidearm regular. While I would never choose the cartridge for deer, I found the cartridge to be quite effective on animals up to large feral dogs. Never used the 32acp on anything but paper and reactive targets, but it shoots a lighter bullet at a higher velocity. I would think the performance would be similar.

I’ve always thought of the .32ACP as a weak .380 with an extra bullet in the mag. Because, in a short barreled carry gun, it’s not that strong.
Strong enough? Maybe, but at the cost of the ammo, it wasn’t attractive.

The longer revolver barrels for the various cartridges can get the .32’s up on par with .380, and the .327 Mag goes big, but really, it needs the longer barrel to do that.
But again....how much is “enough”?
Realistically, for me, it’s the cost that held me back.

Yeah, the cost sucks, but if everything gets back to at least somewhat normal, I will be able to fix that. For what it’s worth, I have heard that when primers do finally come back to where they are commonly found, they will be up about 25%, so what used to cost about $40 will be an out $50, providing I did my math right.

Most of my practable experience with the 32 S&W Long was with the 4" 733. It was an adequate performer. We used to (still do to a lesser extent) have a feral dog problem . The .32 was reliable to put them down, the 32 H&R magnum would be better I think, and if Ruger ever chambers the LCRX (preferably with a longer 4" barrel) in 327 Federal Magnum I will buy one.

But the 32 acp is definitely on the weaker side. I barely accept hollow points in the 380acp, I would definately prefer ball in the 32 acp. Penetration would likely suck with an expanding bullet.

In reality I just like the pistol. Not as well as my Browning 1911-380, but the Zastava is all metal- unlike the Browning, and has the single action trigger and the 1911 like safety.
