Hello, I'm going to be picking up a Savage model 24 in the near future, .22 over a .410 barrel. Anyone have any thoughts on this gun?

I think they are cool, but mine is cooler.

    .223 over 20 ga.:D

  3. It's a cool gun for small game. Keep the 22LR for squirrels and the .410 loaded for rabbits or small birds. It's a good gun to give a beginner too.

I have one from a yard sale back in mid 70's. $15.Stevens.
It has killed everything in the woods where I grew up, at least once. That was my "poor man's" fox/yote gun for a couple yrs painted white. That thing would hit a beer can at 50yrds all day long and inside of 40 a slug was tight enough to hit rabbit size target and up.
Hasn't been out for 25yrs till this past winter. Using it to train a new dog. Excellent for that. You have 2 different reports in one hand.

I would agree, I'd rather have the .223 over 20 gauge, but since I've never seen one... I'll go with what I can get.

How about .223 over 12ga? Or even .308 over 12ga?

    Maybe .223 over 12, but no .308.

The chamberings themselves produced a myriad of options including rifle calibers in not only 22 S/L/LR, but also 22 WMR, .30-.30, .357 Magnum, .22 Hornet, .222 Remington, .223, and .357 Max. Shotgun tubes included .410, 20-guage, and the ever-popular 12-gauge.

Maybe the Baikal combo guns would have that? I think they have 30-06 over 12.

  8. Not sure about the weight of a double barrel. But I have shot single shots of 12ga and they were MISERABLE to say the least.

22 mag or 223 over .410 is my favorite combo

Miserable to carry, or miserable to shoot?

They ARE heavy, no doubt. But that just makes them easier on your shoulder to shoot the shotgun, than a single break action or light pump.

That said, the .410 isn't a bad way to go, if your AO allows for the use of it.:)

The Savage 24 looks like a fun and versatile weapon.

I remember when certain companies would sell pistol caliber inserts for single shot and double barreled shotguns.

You could have a .22 cal, 25, ACP, 32 ACP, .380 ACP, .38 Special, .44 Special and .45 ACP pistol cartridge loaded in one or both barrels.
