Love 'em!

Today, my younger brother and sister decided to help out my dad by cutting his yard with his 18 hp Sears 42" mower.
It's a small yard - 55' by 370'.

They decided to top off the 3 gallon gas tank before they started so,

Instead of adding the gasoline to the fuel tank located above the engine, their eyes were drawn instead to the yellow oil dipstick knob and,
Poured the gas into it.

Imagine their horror when the engine seized while sis was riding it.

We are now discussing buying a smaller, less powerful mower for dad.

Say 30" cutting deck in the 10 hp range.

smh

Oil, Gas. / Potato, Tomato. Fossil fuel / Vegetable. Whatdaya mean they're not interchangeable?
I imagine it once said 'oil' on it once upon a time...

My dad bought that mower thirty years ago.

He's kept it running all these years - his first job outside his parent's house was a small engine repairman for a company called ' Beard and Stone' from 1955 to 1961.

kirk,
who is the 'Florida man', my sister or my brother?

@Rerun - So, don't either of them mow their own lawn? Never used a mower? Brain damaged at birth? I'm still trying to figure out how this happens

I'm as surprised as anyone.

My brother ran a lawn cutting business right out of college with his best friend for about five years.

My sister took over the grass cutting after I enlisted in the Navy in '74.

Maybe the Texas heat fried their brains...?

I was surprised that they were cutting the grass in the first place - I've been doing that ever since my dad stopped cutting when he turned 75. He's 86 now, riding a walker. Right knee is giving him problems.

I dunno what happened with their thought process...

If the frame and deck are good shape drop a new engine on it! New mowers are thin stamped junk!

That's part of the problem now. The new motor isn't always that much cheaper then a whole new mower..

Probably easier to replace the whole thing. Donate the old mower/engine to the local high school shop class, take the deduction, and buy a mower.

PS: Don't let your brother or sister anywhere near the new mower.

[/QQUO so
This was discussed but, dad said he's not ready to tinker with an old deck and new motor.
He wants it to be as easy as possible.

PS - Dad thank my siblings for their assistance in helping him decide to get a new mower. (Yeah, right!)
He told them to leave the yard work to me.

Little Rascal sell a mower attachment? Bet he'd like that.

A small Dixon zero turn would be good to do a small area.

I once used a gas can I got from someone else for my new at the time self propelled walk behind. I filled the tank and pulled the rope a couple times when I smelled diesel fumes. I immediately dumped the fuel out and filled it with gas. It took several pulls of the rope, but it finally started putting slowly and increased a bit at a time. It finally was running and kept running for quite a while.

Family…..Oddly…on Monday I and my son and BIL were sweating our butts off for 8 hours in Washington in their hottest day of the year, putting up a DIY shed kit for my mom. My wife and sister were bringing us water and making sure they held out some lunch for us. My remaining siblings and their 3 adult kids were all in the AC playing games and wondering why we weren’t done so we could go to the beach. The other BIL almost lost teeth, as he complained about it being so hot that it took him three smoke breaks to clean out and take down a freaking 4 pole dome tent they’d spent two nights in. This is the computer whiz that swears “smoking” Washington legal helps him focus, but which actually just makes him work in slow motion so he THINKS he’s hyper focused.

Bonus…the beach was 30 mph winds, overcast and 55 degrees. I loved it!
