For years now I’ve been having this itch for a single action revolver, cowboy style. Leather holster and belt with cartridge loops.
45 LC or .44 Magnum? Which manufacturer?
Probably in 6 months from now if I can score the overtime.
New or used doesn’t really matter with a slight preference for used.
Imagine a riot, cops throwing water bottles , a plate carrier, gas mask, AR10 and a single action revolver on a leather belt.

A lot to be said for either one. My choice was the 45 Colt. It's the classic. But if you don't hand load, the 44 magnum might be more attractive because you can shoot 44 special out of it.

Peace favor your sword (mobile)

Personally I like the 45 Colt. It has a lot of things going for it and only one drawback. It’s a huge case, designed for black powder. It has tons of potential for the hand-loader. It uses a .452 bullet, more face for the hot gasses to push against, (more velocity with less pressure). It works well with IMR 4227 powder. The one draw back? It has a small rim.

according to your views there might be a second drawback. That is do not shoot loads like I am thinking about in your Colt 1873 or one of its clones.

Another vote for the .45 Colt. John, Clint, Audie, and the rest couldn't be wrong. And since you said you preferred used, look around. Ruger made the Blackhawk with a 45 ACP second cylinder. JHP on the left hip, John Wayne on the right.

While the 45 LC is a great cartridge I would go with the .44 magnum for the higher muzzle velocity. There is really no bad choice in my opinion.

In your hypothetical scenario I wouldn't want a single action revolver, I would have something like a Springfield Armory XD-M 10mm with a 15 round magazine in a holster on a magazine belt.

Now if you were talking about a Cowboy Action Shooting competition I would go old school with a Ruger Vaquero in 45 Colt. For that badass look I'd also have two bandoliers crossed over my chest.

The 45 Colt will equal or best the 44 Magnum. You just have to hand load to take advantage of the cartridges capability.

In my swamp stomping days, .44 could be shot out of a .410 single shot.................

So you're saying a hand loaded 45 Colt will equal or best a hand loaded 44 magnum?
I am saying a hand loaded 45 colt can equal or best a 44 magnum. you can go to any of the loading manuals, go to the Ruger Only 45 Colt section.

That's how it works, sometimes.

Of course you have me thinking. I have thought long and hard about having my H&R 45 Colt Buffalo Classic Carbine cut to 454 Casull. Maybe I should be thinking 460 S&W? They chamber - or did chamber - the Handi Rifle in 500 S&W. (I want one) so it's feasible.

I sure wish the H&R rifles would come back. If Henry would chamber their Single Shot in 22 Hornet I would just trade up to Henry, but they made it clear to me that the Hornet was not even on their radar.

I vote .44 Magnum just because there are a lot more options available for it. It's a high-performance cartridge, with plenty of different loadings for it (under normal circumstances), while the .45 LC, while a good cartridge, won't give you the same prolific options unless you plan to reload.

With all of the above being said, if you want a real cowboy gun, you might seriously consider a cap and ball revolver. I have a Uberti Remington 1858 New Army, which is a true blast. There is little more cowboy than a good black powder revolver.
