I was expecting you to be all, "FUCK!! I forgot to pull out... again!!!"
Wife just recovered a month ago from tubal ligation so no worries for my pullout gameI was expecting you to be all, "FUCK!! I forgot to pull out... again!!!"
Think what you want but Jennica has shown several traits that fits the ASD spectrum; and is far behind in communication skills compared to other deaf children, even though we have been teaching her stuff and she understands most of what we sign, she is mostly nonverbal, not social, and she likes lining toys and stuff up, has specific sensory seeking behavior, doesn't much like her brother (unfortunately), prefers independent play versus play with other kids.. she showed several traits earlier that just fits ASD but the professionals wanted to wait because they said "could be developmental.delay, could be just slow, could be just need socialization".I think they over diagnose autism and ADHD... what used to be normal kid energy is now a mental issue to be drugged into submission...
Sounds like a girl I had in my Psych class. It's difficult BECAUSE it's a spectrum. No two of my autistic students presented the same way, though there were some similarities in some kids. I found them both challenging and interesting - still do. @CamoDeafie - I am curious about autistic behavior in a profoundly deaf child. Some of what you describe is quite familiar, while others are new to me. In 23 years I had one deaf child in class and he was both normal and had an interpreter with him, so I have little knowledge of the unique problems this brings. In the words of that great Vulcan scientist... "Fascinating"There's lots of autism. When they say it's a "spectrum," they're not kidding. My son is "on the spectrum" and he seems normal enough most of the time. Smart too. Pegged just near genius on the IQ chart and attended gifted classes for a while. But sometimes he's just a giant a$$h0le. It's challenging.

Ignore Marry. She's cranky and old and not a professional in this field.Think what you want but Jennica has shown several traits that fits the ASD spectrum; and is far behind in communication skills compared to other deaf children, even though we have been teaching her stuff and she understands most of what we sign, she is mostly nonverbal, not social, and she likes lining toys and stuff up, has specific sensory seeking behavior, doesn't much like her brother (unfortunately), prefers independent play versus play with other kids.. she showed several traits earlier that just fits ASD but the professionals wanted to wait because they said "could be developmental.delay, could be just slow, could be just need socialization".
My mom's sister raised a nonverbal autistic son, he's in his 60s now I think? My mother herself was a RN. Wife's mom works with special needs adults; most are on ASD spectrum as well as other things. So yeah we do have a decent family support alreadyIgnore Marry. She's cranky and old and not a professional in this field.
Trust me, dealing with a child on the spectrum will earn you a black belt in patience in short order or a trip to the loony bin.
My best advice is to have or build a good family support group who won't poopoo you or your child's challenges and issues. If you have extended family members who do that, then simply don't talk with them about it and ignore them when they offer advice. They don't know what they're talking about.

She lines things according to size and shape/type, for example, Pepa Pig figures, separate from dinosaurs, and separate from horses. Blocks she lines up but doesn't mix the two kinds we have, wooden ASL ABCs and plastic sensory blocks. She will also stack Mega Bloks according to size (1 pin, 2 pin, 4 pin). We have close friends with ASD spectrum son who's her peer (only 10 days younger), and the mom is an specialist in ASD behavior with a focus on Deaf children.@CamoDeafie - When you say she lines up toys or other objects - is there a particular order? Size, shape, color....? Had a student once who had to have his pencils (all 12) the same length and in the same color order. He was also VERY particular about both his clothes and his shoes.
@lklawson - BINGO! A good support network for both parents and child is imperative.
Yeah, kind of annoying how the only thing Mary has to say about my update is something negative/her opinion, nothing about my kids or anythingI raised a very high functioning (level 1) kid, like @lklawson and a level 2 kid, that was borderline level 3 due to self-harming tendencies, with virtually no outside support for 15 years until his mother and I split up and he ran away to NY and she let him stay there. MaryB sounds just as ignorant as my stepson's fathers and their families. They shit all over everything, including the official diagnoses from both Binghamton General's psych department AND Denver Children's psych program. To this day they insist that he's just different and misunderstood, so they let him get away with murder. He is highly intelligent he obsesses over medication side effects and symptoms of autism. Then manages to present them and point them out when he gets in trouble to use as an excuse for his behavior.
The spectrum is MASSIVE now that Asperger's is re-enveloped in to Autism. Those boys helped me learn how to be a better parent.
🤷♂️ It's allergy season and she's allergic to everything, including common courtesy and grace. She lines things according to size and shape/type, for example, Pepa Pig figures, separate from dinosaurs, and separate from horses.
