Survival on a budget

Thought I would look at survival on a budget. Everybody doesn’t have the means to spend hundreds of dollars on survival gear. Some just might not want to have a lot invested for various reasons. Can you survive on a budget, or will you die? I think not only can you survive, but you can survive quite well.

Let’s look at a bag to carry your gear in and the 10 C’s. This will revolve mostly about Ozark Trails gear with other budget minded gear thrown in here and there.

The Outdoors Products Venture 17 liter backpack has proven itself to me. I have owned this pack for probably 6 or 7 years. If memory serves I paid $10 for this pack. Mine is in a sand color. The packs are still available today at Walmart for $15. The are most commonly found in green with tan trim, but I have seen them occasionally in black.

The back of this pack is lightly padded. The straps are wide and padded as well. There is also a sternum strap. This is a very comfortable pack.

The main pocket is almost a bucket style, which I am fond of. It does have a water bladder compartment with a tube port centered on the top back and a drain hole sewn into the bottom.
The pack has water bottle compartments on both sides.

There is a zippered electronics pouch on the top center of the pack, and a large admin pocket on the bottom. Both of these pockets are single zippered.

Speaking of the zippers. They are fine toothed and small. I halfway expected them to blow out. I have had this pack overstuffed many times and nary a problem with the zippers. The zippers are also quite water resistant. The pack has been exposed to the weather multiple times and I have yet to find the pack contents wet.

The Outdoor Products Venture backpack gives value far in excess of its cost.

That bag looks an awful lot like one of the Midway brand bags I got a few years ago to carry books while I was back in school after retirement. Carrying a bunch of text books every day is one of the best ways to test the durability of a bag because text books are heavy and have sharp corners.

The bag held up nicely, although the water resistant lining deteriorated from constant stretching and poking, and the fabric at the top of the bag became slightly transparent from the stretching, too. Nothing blew out, though.

I am wondering if Midway and Outdoors Products source their bags from the same manufacturer.

I have the OD and tan one. Works great for the price.

That Outdoor Product's bag other than being smaller, looks very much like the Stealth Angel 40L bag I have. If so, it's held up great for the cost. I bet all these type bags that come from China come off same assembly line, but with different QC control for the company brand they go to.

I am pretty sure Fieldline fits right in there.

Field line is always on the shelves here at the local Walmarts. The best time to purchase them is right after hunting season ends. They had some nice 30 liter field line Pro packs on the storage shelf for $10 here just a few weeks ago.n
I'm a bit odd duck here it seems. I prefer the ALICE ruck series, or make my own backpacks, usually ALICE frame compatible. I've got quite a few Coleman Peak 1 frames though, but.. have not really done anything up make more bags that fits the frames other than that one zippered weird toned woodland bag.

Edit; I do have woodland MOLLE packs with frames, owned a FILBE once, got rid of it... because too big for the little frame.
