I got a KonusPro 1.5-5x32 scope some years back, as I've heard of them and saw some reviews how good they were for the cost but had never tried them until I mounted one on my 40 carbine for deer hunting at 75yds or less. Learned little bit later that HP uses the same scope brand on their hunting carbines and also sells it as an accessory on their site.

I decided to email the company as to why this scope's glass was so bright and clear for how low costing it was. I believe I paid around $57 off Amazon for this model #7249.

Anyway, I waited for contact and found that Konus gets all their glass from Japan and grinds in-house with all their models of not just firearm scopes, but also their spotting, bino and telescopes. Now I know why so good of glass and a scope that's not Chinese made. On top of that, Konus, for this model anyway uses an etched reticle and I don't know of any other scope at this price point that uses an etched reticle, without going up into the hundreds of dollars for an etched reticle.

This is a just for your information if you're looking for a Japanese glassed scope, at a better than most scope pricing, that doesn't come from China. An underdog for sure.

Pretty sure it's not the origin of the glass the matters, it's the coatings. And if they're grinding it in house in the US, then it's US coatings, so better than Chinese, not as good as Japanese or German.

Not entirely true. How they make the glass matters about as much as what they coat it with, and don't forget to throw in the importance of lens shape too. Here's a really basic article about it that I keep handy for people who aren't new but are looking to upgrade from bargain optics. It's a few years old so...

I once made a telescope, with a 10” mirror that we ground ourselves. About 8 of us did one each, just for the experience.

Of course, the quality of the glass meant nothing, as it was going to be silvered into a mirror. But it was cool turning a flat chunk of glass into a parabolic reflector, using another chunk of glass, some abrasives, and a lot of elbow grease.

I had a Konus Pro scope I had on my 54r Vepr, and one day I took it out of the safe to look at it, the gun in general for rust, and noticed the scope seemed foggy. I contacted Konus, and they said to send it back, no questions asked. Then they sent me 2 replacement scopes back. Yes, I contacted them, and they said it was a mistake, and thanked me, and sent me a UPS label for me to return one back. I really like my Konus scope, and after that level of service, I'll probably buy another one day soon.
