Awhile ago, I bought a police surplus M&P 9mm at an irresistible price specifically to use as a training gun, but found that it was still too small for my friend's hands. I devised a simple method of measuring trigger reach, though it's not perfect by any means. It's better than straight-up measuring the distance from the backstrap to the trigger though, because this method takes into account the thickness of the grip and the effect that has on how long the reach to the trigger is.

First, you unload your gun, because you're not an idiot.

Second, you hold one end of a short (8") length of paracord against the side of the grip. Thread it through the trigger guard in front of the trigger, around the backstrap, and back to the end you're holding in place. This completely encircles the grip. Pull the cord to take up any slack and depress any trigger safeties, but don't move the trigger itself. Mark the paracord where they overlap. Then you take it off the firearm and measure the length from the end of the paracord to the mark you made, which is the circumference around the grip of the gun and the face of the trigger.

I measured a couple of handguns I could get my hands on. If you guys could do the same (using 550 paracord), I can compile a list of trigger reach measurements that could help folks pick out the right gun for their hands. If you put them up in the thread, I'll add them to my master list here.

Let me know if it's unclear how I did this and I can get some pics uploaded.

I'd be especially interested in measurements from a Taurus Millenium Pro 9mm, a SCCY CPX-2, and a Walther PK380

So this length of 550 cord is ran all the way around the grip, and in front of the
trigger, mid way up. It is parallel to the slide I assume? Shortest distance
through this path, basically where the web of the hand hits the backstrap.

I have a few handguns I can contribute, and some 550 cord ;) maybe 100' OD Green.

Should be pretty close to parallel to the slide. Go for the shortest distance, though, regardless of if it's parallel or not. If the web of the hand is significantly above or below the trigger, which it usually isn't, then the paracord will be at an angle to the slide.

You shouldn't have to really use up any paracord, either. Just put some marks on it. If you don't want to do that, you can always just hold your thumbnail at the right spot.

My tape measure isn't the fabric kind that you have, unfortunately. I planned on using paracord because it's commonly owned by gun guys, and that way we woudn't get differing measurements due to the thickness of the material. It's probably a negligible difference though.

But my para cord is 750 not 550. And I'm not a girl either so I own real tape measures.

I own two of them. They're in my sewing kit right next to the pinking shears.

I thought most of us just kept our Spiderman Underoos?

    ...wow...

For reasons that really aren't sane, I decided to google "underoos" to be sure I was spelling it correctly. Guess what I found?

    Adult Underoos!

Sometimes I actually use a knife to skin wire, and not my teeth...

  16. But a real man will have a women competent enough to sew, and own a tape measure.

Or at the very least they are all obsessed with weight. This means they have a tape measure like that squirreled away in the bathroom so they can ruin perfectly good mornings by wrapping it around their mid section.

Let's leave the 12" "measuring tool" alone...no need to push this into the dark rooms.
