The time spent in rehab is sending me in one direction - towards driving an automatic transmission as my clutch foot is lagging behind.

At the same time, my 87 year old father has completed his PT and has decided he no longer needs his SUV to drive around with running errands as my youngest sister is more than happy to drive for him.

So, I've offered to buy dad's car and take over payments.
I'd sell my pickup and add cash to the deal.

Anybody see any problems?

What is the SUV?
As long as it's not a silly one, like an underpowered V-6 in a large body, or a 4 cylinder turbo in a shoebox sized unit, (looking at my GMC Terrain) you should be fine.

Note, I'm not saying a V6 is bad, I'm saying a V6 in a V8 sized vehicle is bad.

It's a trashy Rav 4 by Toyota, 2018 model with about 25k on it.

My brother uses the same Make and similar model, only gets three years use out of one after putting about 300k miles on it.

It might just be a RAV4, but it'll last your for a lot of years and shouldn't break the bank on upkeep. With everything going on with vehicle prices, you'd do well to take over the payments on it.

100k a year, that's roughly 8,340 miles a month. Oil changes every month? Damn, that's a LOT of mileage. What does he do, travel across Texas weekly?
He inspects houses under construction on behalf of banks for bank payouts.

My dad worked for him for 20 years after dad retired from the post office.

My brother has a degree in Finance and is licensed as an inspector in the State of Texas. He has been in business for thirty years.

Hey not all smaller engines are gutless wonders! The Ford 2.0L Ecoboost has the same HP as the 5.4 Triton V8 my pickup had! My Escape weighs 1,000 pounds less than the F-150 too! When those turbos spool up it will push you back in the seat!

Remember when GM was amazing for offering a 10 year/100k mile warranty in the 80s-90s??
KIA offers a 10yr/100k miles warranty. I'm in the market for an SUV and am considering a Kia Telluride or a Honda Pilot. Leaning towards the Honda.

Absolutely.
Thus my use of the adjective "underpowered". ;)

My 2020 Terrain has a 1.5 Liter Turbo that pushes about 175 HP. It gets 35 MPG at 65 MPH, and once it's wound up its OK, it will accelerate to pass OK....but getting it wound up is silly, despite the 9 speed auto, and it DOES NOT get off the line; and then, if I'm on the interstate at 80-85....it gets 25 MPG. My 390 HP V-8 Titan does 20 MPG. At NO point is the 1.5L ever pushing me back in my seat. It sucks, basically.

Meanwhile my 11 year old Impala gets 30-35 MPG running a 300 HP V6 and a 6 speed, no matter what speeds I run, and feels like it has actual power.

My personal opinion. The late 80s, early 90s Buick v6s were among the best for GM's v6s... particularly in relatively lightweight cars like the GM FWD A-bodies... unfortunately, that particular line disappeared in 1996 and the heavier W-Body replaced it along with other heavier FWD cars. I mean, 150hp, and 200ft lb torque in a car that weighted 3,100 pounds at the most (Buick Century wagon) with a decent 4 speed auto overdrive, for the LG3 which shared heads and intake with the turbo 3.8 V6 of the Grand National... and the LG7 3300 which powered the final A-Body Century cars, 160hp with 185 torque... the 3800 LN7s did good but were IMO stuck into cars that were heavier than needed  then again, the 3800 getting superchargers were pretty good. Chevy 60 deg v6s were OK, but depending on the year maybe a dog, maybe good... 2bbl carbed 2.8Ls in the first Gen S10 and the 1980s Chevy Celebrity and Pontiac 6000 were absolute dogshit. 3.1L 3100 MFI/SFI were pretty good on gas saving although little bit down on torque compared to the Buick v6. It did stay in development and resulted in the 3.4L v6s and I think started the "High Value engine" family of 3.5-3.9L v6s in GMs.

With that said, the 3.6 Pentastar in my 2017 Grand Caravan GT does damn good power wise, 305hp and 269 torque with 6 speed auto.... for a vehicle weighting 4,300 pounds.

Edit. Previous generations of this van line did 150hp-200hp depending on engine.

My wife's Chev Equinox has the same engine and I was quite surprised that a 1.5L turbo has as much pep as it does. We've driven in from Dallas to Knoxville a few times and had no problems in through the mountains.

2.0 ecoboost is 252 HP and 270 ft lbs of torque. The V8 wins the torque battle but with 1,000 pounds less weight it is a wash. If I add an intercooler I can up that HP to 280ish, guys are slapping on bigger turbos and pushing otherwise stock motors to 450 HP on the 2nd Generation motors(what I have). The turbo mod is way to much work for me(Have to machine the exhaust manifold) but the intercooler is doable... The 2nd gen 2.0 was designed from the ground up to accept boost, and the bottom end is stout! Way overbuilt. They also upped compression to 10:1... Fist gen they slapped turbos on an existing design... wasn't a good plan.

Pay attention to that 10 year warranty. It is limited. Let something happen and you will be paying something, if only labor. Often you will take it to the dealership only to find what’s wrong with your vehicle is completely excluded. I do like KIA though. I have had several. Still have one. Would buy another in a heartbeat.

Will give an example. Electric drivers seat motor in my 2016 Optima failed about 3 years ago. Not covered. Cost me about $1300 parts and labor to fix it.

2005 Lesabre 3.8. Headliner is gone. Had to change out some solenoids in the transmission as1st and 4th went away. When it's cold shifts are wonky for the first mile, sometimes. 27-28mpg commuting to and from work. 90miles round trip. Cruising at 77mph for 80 of it. On a trip same speed it gets 32. Interior lights blew a couple of years ago. Short somewhere. Gauge cluster took a spike 4 years ago and the gas gauge took a shit. The digital menu still works so fuel info is available there. 5 months ago the speedometer when nuts. I drove it to Florida back in December. Used GPS in the phone for my speed. Used clusters are in the junkyards. It's rust free. I think the rear strut bearings on the top of the struts need replaced. It had air ride on it originally. Converted to conventional. 239K on it. Doesn't use oil. AC, heat, and cruise work great. I've been shopping for a lower mileage one. Not having much luck. Pricing is stupid on them. This fall when the economy shitz they will be much cheaper.

1997 Lesabre 3.8 218K on it. I think I just replaced the original rear drum brakes. Only reason was a wheel cylinder popped. Everything still looked new. I was in there @150K when I bought it. 22-24mpg driving the same commute. Gas gauge always reads full. No digital info. I reset the trip odometer to keep an eye on the fuel level. It has more get up and go than the '05. It gets downright violent at the right kickdownspeed. Frequently the tail, and headlights are on when I drive it in the daytime. Not going to worry about it. Heat AC work great except for the blend door actuator took a dump. I can turn the heat on, can't turn it off. I reach inside the glove box and flip the lever if I don't need it. The digital controlled actuators are everywhere for the "Limited" editions. Not the "Customs." Go figure. It might be a little vacuum "manifold" in there. Can't find them either. However a '96 Corvette piece looks the same. I think the replacement EGR valve I put on quit working yesterday. I heard a loud whistle in that area when I got home. Cheap 20 minute fix.

Great mechanicals, but the electronics suck.

I swear the Big 3 source from suppliers that have the shortest lifespans.
I inherited a 2002 Chrysler T&C from my father. It had all the latest bells and whistles in it. A bulb burnt out in the heater/ac cluster, and then another. Only they weren't replaceable bulbs, they were LEDs soldered in the board. At the time, the dealer wanted $800 (!!) to replace the unit. Eff that, I sourced some LEDs and replaced all of them. End of problem.
