C'mon, neither of us were surprised. I swear the weather people make extra $$ for fear-mongering.
True this!
The 'weathermen' rarely mention the actual temperature citing the wind chill/heat index instead so whatever sounds worse is specified.
Ditto the colour range depicting weather - in the beginning temps in the hundreds were shown as red, now temps as low as eighties are red and the hundreds are a strange shade of puce.
Some with cold except using blue.

Fear mongering basterds!

My octogenarian father yells about wrapping the pipes when the temperature starts getting down to the forties.

-17 for a high after -30 low last night. City had something freeze up at the water tower so no water for 12 hours while they trucked in a new part... So glad I keep about 20 gallons of water in jugs for emergency flushes!

Cold and windy today. Of course it blew down some trees because of the water saturated ground. Power out since a few minutes after noon today. Just came back on. Supposed to drop to 14 degrees tonight. That’s ok, I have lots of fireward from the trees that have been falling lately.

Now THATS A LAND.....I MEAN, YACHT.

Deville, isn't it? 1960 or so?
59 Buick. That one made it to shore. There's a 1951 Chevy truck that the Coast Guard sunk that I really like but couldn't find a pic.

Use Google to research the above photo - you'll find it was taken in 2004.
On the same page, scroll down to find photos of the converted truck.

Or, go to www.floatingcubans.com

That's not the one i was referencing. The one I was thinking of happened in the early 90's. Remember it from TV news. It was covered in surface rust and it looked like it could barely float. Most likely I have the make & year wrong.

Warming up here
I guessed pretty close when I said -38. At 7:00 this AM it was -37. Wife said at 6:00 she read -38.
Had to take her to cancer treatment today. 60 miles one way on I-80. There were 10 semis on the side on the flats going West bound. On the East bound lanes there were close to 30. We lost count. Coming home we looked at the tractors and some of the trailers. Same as we see each year when it gets down low on temps. Southern trucks it seems are the main problem. Hoods up on nearly all of them. Usual culprits here in the winter. They never seem to learn. A very few we can't tell where from. You know, the JB and Schneider trucks. But the trailers with furniture companies from North Carolina were well represented. Had trailers with Century, Klauseanxx?, and Broyhill on them. We see some of them every year when it gets cold. There was another furniture company truck from Tennessee, but we don't remember that name right now. Visibility was so bad this afternoon that most semis were only running 45 mph with a few at 55 tops. Over 1/2 running with 4 ways on.
