I don't know... I mean, obviously it's wrong and is a huge discourtesy and insult to real heroes who were actually injured in the line of duty. At the same time, I know what it's like to want so badly to be able to sacrifice for my country. I was the guy who signed up for the Marines, then the National Guard but was disallowed because of a chronic childhood disease. I watched my cousins and my buddies all enlist and get to go while I stayed behind. That's a huge disappointment. So, I can see where a guy who was stuck doing nothing during his time in the service would like to be able for a moment to talk the talk. But I tried to enlist to serve my country and if battle scars and war-stories were the result, so be it. This guy used the military as the means to an end.

The obvious difference is that he did it for his own selfish reasons and true heroes don't enlist for the glory. And the best litmus test of whether or not a guy did what he says he did in combat is if he's bragging about himself. Guys who are the Real Deal brag about fellow soldiers or refuse to talk about their service time at all, in my experience.

I think the guy is a dirtbag for faking it, but I can also understand why he'd want to.

Same here.. I wanted to enlist into the Marines but was disqualified because of my diabetes, So I enlisted into a State Defense (also called state militas/guards) unit in South Carolina. I think there's a unit as well as a naval militia in Ohio. These are units that are sanctioned by the state military department (sometimes by the State's homeland security section) to serve as a force multiplier for first responders. I still wish I could go overseas, but I feel like I serve my country in my community. I've been in for 6 years, Iit's been one great experience.
