I seem to remember hearing about a sci-fi book about such a satellite that drifted out of orbit and began cooking people and land in the path of the beam.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I think that spaced based energy gathering is a wonderful idea. All we have to do for it to succeed is trust humanity to not be douche-nozzles.

4000+ years of history doesn't lend much to faith in that trust.

Trust your government. They would never do anything to hurt you.... Trust your government. They would never do anything to hurt you...

I'm pretty certain one or two scientists weren't really sure what was going to happen with the first nuclear above ground test let alone the first underground test.
The frigging thing could have eaten the atmosphere or cracked the earth crust.

No silly, hair spray eats the atmosphere. Nukes are perfectly safe.

Nuclear weapons are pure unadulterated evil and have given us a key to a porthole to hell......

A beautiful huge life giving force that wraps us in warmth yet can annihilate us at a moments notice. Is it God? I think it could be.

Well...the energy is "free"...but converting to a useable form is expensive and inefficient due to the need for batteries (unless you only want power during daylight)

That and manufacturing solar cells is typically requires more energy to produce then the cells will convert in serviceable life
