Playing with my new remote BBQ thermometer. Ordered a Smoke X4 form Thermoworks(makers of the Thermapen instant read thermometer that I have 3 of now). 1 mile range open ground so it will make it through my foil faced insulated walls. 3 meat probes and a smoker temp probe to keep an eye on things from in the house.

https://www.thermoworks.com/smokex

Not cheap! But I have gone through 4 other remote thermometers that either didn't work for crap or they died in 4 months so decided to go with the pros. My first Thermapen is going on 12 years old or more! Still working but I slightly melted the case so it is no longer water tight.

It will die soon from moisture intrusion... steam form whatever is cooking, smoke form the BBQ pit, grease fumes from the deep fryer have all been contaminating the probe connection so it was time for a new one and send that one in for rebuilding.

One stays with the beer brewing stuff, one in the kitchen and one for the BBQ pit use...

Made $80 to put towards the scope fund. Neighbor needed a replacement door handle installed on his GMC, and his step-daughter needed a new blend door actuator on her pontiac.

He seemed a little irritated at $80 for my time but considering a shop would have nailed him for $200, just in labor. I think he made out okay...

I had people complain..

"I can take the new parts out and put the bad back in, you forfeit the upfront fee for disposal/diagnosis and can take it to another shop..."

Usually shut them up. I am not a charity dude, that bench full of test equipment wasn't cheap!

I cut him off before he could complain by explaining how I had to pull the entire glove box assembly, center control station trim panel, left and bottom kick panels, fuse panel cover, and right dash trim piece.

Then I told him I also topped off her coolant with some 50/50 dexcool I had left over from my own radiator replacement, because it was super low.

Now she has heat and is happy.

I've done it so many times on other cars, it only took me 20 minutes. That's what had him irritated was the brief amount of time it took. He offered me another $40 this morning after he Googled it and saw it could have cost him between $200 and $700 depending on which actuator was bad.

Charge what it's worth. My dad (carpenter) used to do stuff for people around the neighborhood for cheap. He kept busy on what should have been his off time every day except Sunday (fishing day). My mom convinced him to start charging close to what his time was worth and pretty soon the neighbors left him alone. He still had the odd job or 2, but spent more time with the family...and fishing.

I might be easy, but I'm not cheap.

I didn't take it...

The price was the price, and it was probably the soon-to-be ex wife had something to do with it.
You have anything to do with that

$24/Hr?? That IS cheap. When I do offsite gigs and private parties/catering my labour is a LOT more than that. Plus I charge for food costs (no markup, tho) and if I and my guys have to pack in service dishes. Usually a customer will provide their own on private parties. I can do the special Dirty Sock Soup (as mentioned in a another thread) for a little extra but if I have to wear the Tarzan outfit my price triples.
