Rep. Maxine Waters a hard-liner for public healthcare option
At a town hall at L.A. Southwest College, the congresswoman says she'll back a package only if it includes a government-run insurance plan. The issue seems to be dividing lawmakers in Washington.

U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Los Angeles) said she would refuse to vote for a healthcare reform package that did not include a provision for creating a government-run medical insurance plan that would compete with private insurers -- a statement that drew loud cheers Saturday at a town hall meeting at Los Angeles Southwest College.

The statement appeared to illustrate hardening lines in the battle over healthcare reform in Congress. Waters voiced dismay with comments made by White House officials last week that have been widely perceived as backing down from the so-called public option.

"President Obama has been trying to reach across the aisle" to win a compromise with Republicans, Waters said. "It is not going to happen."

Then Waters made a public appeal to Obama.

"The people of this country elected you and gave you a Democratic majority in the House and the Senate. . . . Yes, we know that you are a nice man, that you want to work with the opposite side of the aisle. But there comes a time when you need to drop that and move forward," Waters said. "We're saying to you, Mr. President, 'Be tough. Use everything that you've got. Do what you have to do. And we have your back.' "

The town hall meeting was notable for those who didn't show up: enraged hecklers adamantly opposed to healthcare reform, who have disrupted similar events across the country.

Linda Krausen, a South Pasadena resident who attended a contentious town hall in Alhambra earlier this month, marveled at the difference. In Alhambra, "it was such a shouting match," Krausen said. "I could actually understand what's on the table here."

Waters reserved her most searing critiques for Senate Democrats who have not embraced the public option.

"Not only are we going to do everything we can to organize and put pressure on the senators -- some of whom are Neanderthals -- we're going to say to the president, 'We want you to use every weapon in your basket in order to get those senators to do what they should be doing,' " Waters said.

The town hall meeting was held in an area of the county that is home to impoverished neighborhoods that have long struggled with inadequate access to healthcare.

The need for healthcare services was vividly illustrated in the last two weeks when thousands of people lined up for hours at the Forum in Inglewood at an eight-day free health clinic. The crowds were so large that many in need were turned away.

Joseph Price, an emergency medical technician from Pico Rivera who volunteered at the Forum, was upset that so many had to depend on chance to find healthcare.

"It shouldn't have to be a matter of winning the Lotto," Price told the town hall.

Some attendees at the meeting, while supporting reform, were worried that they were not winning broad support for the public option. One man noted that Waters expressed her vision for healthcare reform by going over more than a dozen key points, and said that the complicated rationales for healthcare reform were making it difficult to win converts.

"This is not an easy idea" to argue, the man said. "The question is, how do you simplify the message? Until it gets simple, how can you win the debate?"

There was no easy answer.

"Every day, we're working to try to refine the message," Waters said.

My wife works in health care. She and everyone she knows at the hospital are absolutely livid! They are offended and insulted with the insinuation that the "Care" is broken and needs fixed. They all agree that how it gets paid for is in need of reform, but "Care" is not.

Me personally, i say stop giving free health care to illegals. They don't have any right to healthcare, and it is insulting to the rest of us to give them free health care. They didn't earn it. Maybe if they stopped getting all the freebies they will stop trying to get here anyway they can.

That is one thing you can be certain will not happen. The political party(ies) in control have too much invested in getting illegal votes from illegal aliens and their supporters. For an example of their thinking, look at California. A true economic disaster is being dealt with by doing a million small things that will not help the budget but they also do not impact any of those 'social programs' so dear to those buying votes--and it's not the Democrats acting alone, they have a Republican governor (go ahead and call him a RINO, but he's registered as and sits in the governor's chair as a Republican) and other Republicans who agree to these non-measures.

Well if we be neanderthals then isn't it time to act as such and start removing limbs from the offending politicians?

They keep throwing this crap around and things just get worse and worse causing people to get angrier and angrier. These people are trying to cause an uproar and they better be careful what they wish for. Im going to go clean my rifles I need some zen time.

Well excuse me you sanctimonious rhymes with runt, I THOUGHT Senators doing what they were supposed to doing ,was representing their constituents not towing the line and voting a certain way because they happen to be in that party. Please please wake up America and vote every single incumbent from BOTH parties out!

+1 I can't understand how it was ever approved to give them health care in the first place. I think it should have been a boot out the boarders if they are truly illegal.

Yeah, unfortunately it is all in the beliefs of the administration. To some they are illegal aliens, to others they are undocumented immigrants. Interpretation should never come into play with the law!

Wait a minute!

Pressuring senators to do what they should be doing?

Well wouldn't that be voting on bills and laws according to what their constituents want? And at this time on the topic of Gov Health Care, it seems to be NO to Gov Health Care at this time. Seems to be that there are a majority of the US citizens that do not want the Gov Health Care or the added expense.

They (the politicians) are so full of it sometimes.

They (the politicians) cant even see that we see right through them.

And then we go and vote them right back in cause we cant see.

The blind leading the blind into a ditch.
