I was serious about the break-even point and my ROI when I started reloading. Of course, I didn't have a used set of gear laying around for me and I had to buy new. I ran the numbers and and decided to load for break-even using .223 Rem. My break even on that was, ims, around 900 rounds of FMJ or around 600 rounds of JSP. Once I met that threshold I was happy as a clam.

I know that it was a joke, but going by what you've had to lay out for stuff, you're break-even point on 7.62 TOK is going to be several hundred rounds. Partially this is because you don't have all the tools to make 7.62 TOK out of .223 Rem brass. You'll need to ream the neck once you have it sized. I believe that Greg posted about it somewhere. If you pony up for an official case neck reamer, it'll be more expensive, but you can also use a combination of drill bits. Apparently, most people reforming .223 Rem/5.56 NATO to 7.62 TOK use first ream the neck with an N size drill bit (.302) and then follow up with a 5/16 (.3125) drill bit, though I've read of people claiming success with only one or the other. There are also some folks claiming that only the 5.56 NATO brass needs reamed because the .223 Rem brass tends to be thinner. I wouldn't bet any money on that, though.

This is definitely on my list of things to try but it's not happening quickly because it'd be yet another set of dies to buy (and an N bit). And bullets, of course. :)

Kirk
He just needs a way to trim to length and turn the neck. You already have the tool for neck turning, just need the accessories.

Add $15 for a digital scale. That old one's in rough shape and I really don't trust it.

On a better note, took a bit of work to unseize it but I now have a freely moving case trimmer with a #1 collet (not that I have a clue what that means or how to use it). One question. At the end of the shaft is a sharp toothy gear & pin. Loosen the allen screw and the pin will come out but the toothy thing won't budge. Shouldn't that come off as well?
that toothy thing is the cutter head, and most of them don't come off. the pin in the middle is the "pilot" and is made for a certain bullet diameter. the "collet" is the split gizmo at the far end and will have grooves to fit several different case sizes. I would suggest you go online and look up the Forester catalog - that will identify the various parts you have & make life simpler.

once again, the Lyman reloading manual is geared to beginners, and will help you a lot.

Thanks to Histed & Merle I not only know how my case trimmer works, I also know it's already set up for Tok. (well 30/06 actually but same set up). Unable to locate a manual for the press online, but checking manuals for other makers turret presses I have a fairly good idea how it's supposed to work.

While I'm waiting for parts & things, anybody have a tried & true Tok recipe including which powder to use? Also, where's a decent place to find supplies? (powder, primers, shells, boolits)

The cutter head is part of the shaft. It does not come off, the whole shaft is replaceable.

My two favorites on line
https://www.midwayusa.com/ - they often run a special "no haz mat fee" depending on what you buy

https://www.grafs.com/ - About $8.00 shipping no matter what you buy, one piece or a truckload.

As for data, never loaded Tok, but I can't imagine that Unique wouldn't work. Personally, I like CCI primers. Winchesters have worked well for me, but I've never had any luck with Federal or Remington. HOWEVER, I know someone else will swear by those last two and hate CCI. Don't know how much experience you have, so here it is fwiw - once you pick a primer, stay with it UNLESS you start at the bottom and work up with a different primer. DO NOT switch from standard to magnum primers WITHOUT backing off on your powder. KA-BOOMs are no fun.

Don't know how much experience you have,
Really? Haven't exactly kept it a mystery. That would be "zero" experience. Digging this stuff out of my kids closet was the first time I've ever touched anything to do with reloading.

who are fond of their face & fingers......
Seriously though, whichever manual I go for first, is there any reason to pay more for the latest greatest edition? How much could have really changed between edition #49 and #50?

Updates on powers and new ammo available.

Flash has a good recipe in the reloading zone for Tok.use it

True. Sometime my oldtimers kicks in at odd moments. As for manuals, Hodgdon put out a magazine supplement every year with the latest update on their powders. 2017 should be available anywhere you can get gun magazines. I tend to get manuals from the bullet manufacturers - Sierra, Speer and Hornady are my usual. They tend to test powders from various makers. And you can access Ramshot, Accurate, IMR, Hodgdon, Winchester and more online.

So the collection of needful things continues.

$13.99 - How long before it's broken?

$17.89 - Since I really need the ABCs and latest update info can be found online, this was the best deal I found for a one-from-current edition. Could have gotten a Speer #11 from the 80's for cheaper.

$11.00 - This was a coin flip.

So posted tally is up to $122.97 although I won't actually buy the dies & scale (& other things) till Friday.

Once I'm comfortable with it and convinced I won't blow up my CZ-52 or myself, I know the second round I'm going after. Since this wouldn't be happening if my son hadn't said "Yea, sure. You can have that $hit.", I'll be loading 10mm for him. It'll also give me incentive to finally pick one up.

Those bullet pullers are pretty tough. I've never broke one. My kid did messing around with it.
